Karolina Breguła and Fotoaura Institute of Photography have been collaborating since 2017. “Storm” was preceded by Breguła’s solo exhibition “Square” and a production of a 5 channel film installation under the same title.
“Storm” is a 5 channel installation depicting five people standing at the sea shore, observing a violent storm on a distant island. The protagonists know very well that what is happening on the island, may soon happen on their land too. They are scared but also fascinated by the destructive storm.
The films were originally planned to be shot on the beach of Keelung. As the shooting time approached, the global pandemic broke out and entry into Taiwan was banned. Because Breguła was in Poland, the decision was made to realize the project online. The crew in Taiwan recorded actors’ face expressions using a face recognition phone application and recorded their voices remotely. The whole project was produced in such a way that the European members of the crew did not have to leave their homes.
“Storm” is a story about a coming danger, which may be understood as the climate crisis, political tensions or military conflicts. Because the project was produced shortly after the coronavirus outbreak, it’s also naturally interpreted as a story about waiting for the pandemic.
